Take control of your business’ financials … don’t let the numbers control you!

  • Are you ready to grow your business to new heights?
  • Do you get overwhelmed by your business’ numbers?
  • Do you want to operate more profitably?
  • Do you want to protect yourself from trouble with the IRS?
  • Would you rather run your business or let it run you?

Let me tell you a story

Years ago, my business mentor gave me a powerful piece of advice that has made the difference in my businesses. I was relatively new to the business world when I opened a spreadsheet of the previous month’s numbers and was shocked by one particular number that was far from good.

I related my situation to my mentor and he told me: “You should know your business well enough that you are never surprised by your business’ numbers”. I took that advice to heart and made the promise to myself that I would never be surprised again.

Fast forward through the years – I’ve started several businesses, I’ve achieved my accounting designation, and I’m a business coach for other successful businesses. My mentor’s advice has proven itself to be invaluable and I’m passing along the same advice to others.

Problem number one

Every day thousands of small businesses are started around the US. Sadly, most of those businesses barely make it through the first two years. Many business owners start their business on a dream and with a solid skill-set, but an understanding of the financials is often lacking. They learn through experience that business financials is not the simple calculation of “revenues minus expenses equal profits”. Unfortunately, many learn that lesson too late.

Without a solid understanding of the numbers, and how they work, businesses may not be able to acquire the credit they need to operate, they may not be able to pay for vital components to get the job done, they may be surprised by higher-than-expected taxes, and they may not be able to make the best business decisions because they don’t have all the facts. What’s worse, they may be at risk if the IRS ever came knocking. Without an adequate understanding of business financials, it is the numbers that control the entrepreneur, NOT the entrepreneur who controls the business.

In short, an inadequate understanding of financials is a high-risk, high-likelihood recipe for business loss, either now or in the future.

Problem number two

But there’s another reality at work here, too. You’re busy. I get that. You don’t have time to go back to school and take a refresher course on business math. You don’t have time to go through those instruction manuals for your online bookkeeping software. You don’t have time to sit down with your bookkeeper and grill them on the numbers. You run a business and it needs your full attention all the time. Like most business owners, you’ve probably looked around and seen that there are resources online but they are of dubious quality or too advanced for what you need or not focused enough on business financials to be applicable to you.

What you need is a resource that understands that you’re a busy entrepreneur with specific business financial needs. What you need is a resource that explains exactly what you need to know, skips all the stuff you don’t need to know, doesn’t speak down to you, and doesn’t add to the confusion with esoteric terms.

What you need is a resource that respects your time and your intelligence. What you need is a resource that gives your than theory, but rather sound practical guidance to quickly and easily work your way through the world of accounting.

Introducing the solution

That’s what Simply Simple Bookkeeping is designed for. When I wrote it, I drew from my experience as a business owner and my training as an accountant. It was created to communicate the financial information you need to know but not to take up all of your time.

Most importantly, Simply Simple Bookkeeping was written to make you the pilot of your own business, to put you in control of your business’ financials, and to empower you to make the best decisions based on the best financial information.

Simply Simple Bookkeeping starts with three case studies that outline the typical bookkeeping challenges that small businesses face. It’s very likely that you will identify with one of the case studies because these are among the most common scenarios I’ve seen as an accountant and a coach.

Then, you’ll read about a myriad of critical topics relating to the fundamentals of bookkeeping such as the benefits of bookkeeping and when you shouldn’t be your own bookkeeper. In this easy-to-read section, you’ll learn about different ways that people keep track of their books and what resources are available for you to keep track of your books online.

After that, Simply Simple Bookkeeping introduces you to the key terms and ideas in bookkeeping, from a chart of accounts to debits and credits to depreciation. You’ll learn the basics to transform you from an entrepreneur who might be intimidated by the idea of bookkeeping and is being controlled by the financials into an entrepreneur who is in total of control of your business and able to navigate your way through complex decisions based on sound financial information.

One of my readers writes:

“I want to work on my business; I don’t want to worry about my numbers. In the past, my solution was to ignore my numbers and hope for the best but Simply Simple Bookkeeping gave me the confidence to understand my business’ books and to make good decisions based on what I now know”

This book is meant to do more than just tell you about bookkeeping. There are other books out there that do that. This book is meant to bring clarity to a part of the business that most entrepreneurs find confusing and to empower business owners to make the right decisions.

I make no bones about the fact that this book was meant to be read actively. In other words, I want you to read the book and take decisive, positive business action because of it. Another one of my readers writes:

“When I picked up a copy of Heather Villa’s Simply Simple Bookkeeping book, I was just looking for a reference manual I could refer to when I needed it. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to read more than a page or two now and then. But I read the whole thing through in one sitting and realized that I needed to implement everything NOW! So then I read it through again, taking action every step of the way. Thanks for a great read and a practical business resource, Heather!”

As a business owner, you NEED to be in control of your business, which means you NEED to understand your business’ financials. It doesn’t have to be an intimidating or time-consuming effort. Simply Simple Bookkeeping shows you exactly what you need to do and exactly what you need to do to be successful.

If you are ready to take control, if you are ready to run a more profitable business, if you are ready to reduce potential IRS issues, if you are ready to make better business decisions that can dramatically improve your business, then you can’t afford to spend another moment without Simply Simple Bookkeeping.
