@Keith - I think you said a key component 'work hard'. Sometimes I feel as though [some] entrepreneurs forget about the 'working hard' concept when the going is good. You can never forget where you came from, because when the going gets tough, you have to remember how you got where you were in the first place and do that again!

Hi Heather
Came over from Barbara Swafford's site, super clean looking site you have here.

Guess we've all had to learn how to deal with disaster during this "credit crunch".
I work in the construction industry, which in the UK has been hit very badly.
All you can do is chase every lead, work hard and hope for the best.

Barbara,

I agree with you. I have found with most clients I work with that the 'it' that hits the fan is something that could have been prevented had they followed a previous instinct.

Bob,

Good points, but I am sure the statistics that you speak of register true 'employees'. These points can apply to companies working with Independent Contractors as well. Most micro-organizations have one or more independent contractors (and in this world most are virtual). In addition these points can apply to oneself and the relationship to the situation. Most 'hitting the fan' is not a solo issue - and there is at least one other party involved (even if not a staff member), let's say it is a relationship with the bank or a vendor - you can still utilize most (not all) of these points.

Hi Heather,

Excellent post, as is Art Petty’s. Good advice that no one should argue with, or ignore. But, I did notice one thing—in each of the tips you presented, you mention “staff,” “team,” or “leader.” That would infer that you had enough people in your business, where these terms would be meaningful. Yet, according to the 2004 U.S. census (the latest data available), less than 5% of all businesses in the U.S. had nine or more employees, and almost 77% of all businesses had no employees at all.

Therefore, my question would be: What do the vast majority of businesses with no, or few, employees do when “it” hits the fan?

Hi Heather,

I'll have to go and read the entire article, but one thing I've noticed is if we really pay attention, our gut usually tells us "something's not right". Heeding those feelings can help to stop a potential problem in it's tracks.

I had to laugh at your line, "...create a file called “When ‘it’ hits the fan”...". That's actually a fabulous idea.
